my mare is loosing her tail hair.. its like in crusty patchs and then comes off with tail hair still attached to it.. I brush her tail and I have to clean the brush out twice before Im finished.. I thought that maybe I was raping her tail too tight but I couldnt be because the self stick rap stretchs and can slide right off. I thought maybe it was a fungis and bought some stuff to put on it and hopefully that well help..but I was wondering if it may just be from being pregnant and all the heat.
have any ideas?

Why are you wrapping her tail?

You need to be careful with tail wraps (wraps that cover the entire tail bone)...even moderately tight they can cut off the circulation and cause complete hair loss...it can also cause colic like symptoms (don't ask me why)...

I wanted to wrap my mares tail when she was pregnant when she started to rub her butt on the stall. She was rubbing off alot of hair, but the foaling facility owner warned me that I should never wrap a pregnant mares tail because of circulation loss and a resulting loss of all tail hair. Like LRidgeway above, I would not recommend wrapping her tail at all. Losing some hair is alot better than all of it.

she is showing great signs of being in labor and trying to foal early. I wrap her tail up with a CO-FLEX a cohesive flewable bandage. which you dont have to wrap the tail tight. I wrap her tail do to that I have her on cams and I need to see what is going on and the wrap keep the tail out of the way. I only wrap able 5" on the tail. i start it about 3 inchs fromt he base and then wrap the bandage once around and have it stick to itself. yet to see the vulva from a distince. I put some fungis lotion on it and that seems to be helping with the blotish of dried skin with hair stuck in it... and to the wrap helps keep her clean as well so her tail doesnt get matted from the discharge and all...
