I have a 7 year old mare who has developed from an old injury in her back hocks, arthritis. She suffers terribly in the winter when we have to keep her stalled at night. We decided to breed her this year (she has had one previous foal when she was 3 years old (before the injury). We have been giving her a product called SYN-FLEX which has helped her a lot. However I have been reading and it says it has not been proven to be safe for pregnant woman/animals due to a lack of studies. It has helped her so much that I would hate to have to discontinue it for fear that once she is off of it and is heavy in foal she will suffer so much that we will have to give her bute for the pain, she was bred ony 35 days ago. Can you give me any feed back on this or if there is a product out there that is safe and effective to use on a pregnant mare in her condition?. Thank you in advance. Sincerely Janet H. |

Janet: My mare delivered a beautiful filly this month and she has been on glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for years. Your mare should not have any probelms if she is already on the supplements. If she is not, I would consult my vet before starting her on them. You should not introduce anything new for the first 60 days (I believe) after breeding. Good luck. |

I think MSM can cause problems, although I believe that it is more because it can be disruptive to the cycle. |

Thank you so much! I have not given her the supplement since breeding her, she was on it until then though. She is doing pretty well right now, but my worry is when she is heavy in foal during winter, when she tends to suffer the most. She is 72 days in foal right now. I have been told by my Vet that he does not recommend keeping her on it during pregnancy, however he also says it would be ok to give her Bute during the last trimester, I have been told by another Vet that he does not recommend Bute during pregnancy so I am confused to say the least. Thank you for your replies, You are both very kind to reply. |

Consider homeopathic remedies as they are safe to use during pregnancy. They may not have as dramatic an effect as standard medication but at least you can use them with peace of mind... |

Unfortunately, homeopathic remedies - like glucosamine - have not been researched for use in pregnant mares, so there is no guarantee that they are not potentially harmful either. In fact, in many cases, they have not been researched period, so proof of efficacy is restricted to anecdotal rather than peer-reviewed research evidence. |

Thanks Jos and AG, if you both know of anything that might help her and is safe, please let me know. Has anyone ever tried acupuncture for such conditions...with any success? I would be interested in hearing about it. Happy breeding/foaling everyone. Sincerely Jan |

I have had my 17 yr old mare on Gloco/Chondro for 9 years and she has foaled once during that time and delivered a beautiful colt. She has navicular and has been on short term bute also. I was happy to find this man in Australia that has put my gelding in remission from his lymphoma cancer using natural remedies! So of course I have now switched my mare who is 11 months pregnant to his natural remedy for inflammation/healing and she is doing Awesome!!!! I highly recommend www.herbal-treatments.com to anyone that needs help with natural remedies. I'm working on my testimonial for my gelding and just decided to add my two cents here. I hope this is helpful. |

I haven't used glucosamine, but have used injectable forms. While I was pretty concerned, the vets and I decided it was in her best interest, and the risks to the foal were unlikely. She received several iv injections of Legend because of a prior injury that required surgery. I can't say that I wasn't nervous, but felt that I had made an informed decision. My mare benefited from the injections, and delivered a strapping, healthy colt last month. As Jos stated, there is little (practically none that I could find) information regarding the use of these medications/supplements during gestation...and reports are primarily anecdotal. |

Thanks Heather, I decided against using it during gestation, but I have been putting her on low dose bute, I give her a pill every 5 days in her food, the regular dosage is two tablets for her weight. She is doing ok on it and I believe she and the foal will do alright with little to no side affects like ulcers at that low dose. I plan on stopping it once she gets down to her last week or so or as soon as she looks nearly ready to foal by bagging up, softening around the hip etc. |
