I noticed tonight that my mare had some discharge hanging from her vulva. I continued to watch her and when she urinated it was very thick and gel like..this is 4 days post foaling. I'm trying to get in touch with my vet but this is foaling season and he's a busy guy.. . Just want to make sure this is normal or should I REALLY be getting in touch with my vet (ie call his emergency pager). She is eating fine, drinking, lots of manure. I picked up the slimy stuff that was laying on top of the straw and kept it aside for the vet to look at if need be. Any thoughts? |

I would take her temp and see if it is normal and check for heat in her feet. Did she have a post foaling exam? There will be post foaling discharge as the uterus evolves but I personally have not seen it gel like. To be on the safe side I would call your vet. If she perhaps retained even a small portion of placenta she could founder. |

Joy - I would get the vet involved. My mare, Classy had discharge last year after foaling - it increased a lot and was bloody looking. The vet came and lavaged her uterus and filled her with antibiotics. She was fine after that. Sandy |

What color is it and does it smell? As Suzanne suggested, take her temp and check her feet. This could be serious. If it is green, has a bad smell, she has a temp. and her feet are warm....It is an emergency |

Hello i have a mini mare that is about to foal. She is my first mini. We have quarter horses. But as im finding out minis are not that much like are quarter horses when it comes to foaling. Does anyone know what temp the stall should be or what is a comtroable temp for a baby mini to be born in. Please e-mail me back at mandy_miessner@yahoo.com thanks |
