Alrighty folks here is the run down , bred my one mare who never catches , unknown reasons ? I was assuming mare was NOT in foal , Breeding date was May 1st till May 15th 2004 . I have noticed a few strange out of sorts things about her lately that make me question this mares condition . I know it probably best to just palpate her but wanted to see what you all think about this ? This past week she has been acting like she has some mild colic symptoms , a little rolling , kicking belly ALOT , no pain really noticed , looking heavier in the belly all of a sudden , one milk vien is always a little bigger then normal even when NOT in foal , but noticed a increase in the vein ! This mare is 14 years old and has only had 1 foal that was 5 years ago ... Also If I push on her flank area , as soon as I stop I try to look for movement and dont really see anything but she starts kicking her belly again as if something is bothering her ??? Anywho was wondering if she could be behaving like this cause she is in foal ? I will attach a few photos of her for your opinions sorry for the novel , just kinda curious as this is way out of sorts for her , but she doesnt seem to be in any real pain , just appears ANNOYED by something ! Painted Acres: By the looks of the picture, she certainly looks in foal. I have one mare who was bred around the same time as yours, and she was confirmed in foal by the vet, and I'd say her belly looks about the same. My mare kinda acted the same way a couple of weeks ago, just acting really annoyed, but then again, while she was acting like this, I was noticing A LOT of heavy foal movement. After you had bred her through the first part of May, did you ever notice her come back into heat? If she didn't, then I would assume she is in foal....if she did, then I would be looking for other reasons for the mild colic symptoms and the enlarged abdomen. |

HI Sandy This mare has always been hard to even show a heat cycle , we never really noticed any real heat cycles , she has had a complete reproductive check up and there is no reasons why this mare never seems to catch she just doesnt .. So when we put her with the stallion it was to just hope for a foal ..lol Maybe this year will be the year who knows ... It is a different stallion we bred her to this year as well so maybe that helped ... I'm keeping a few extra eye;s on her , I'll keep you all posted on what developes . We have tried for about 4 years to get her in foal so lost all hopes she would catch ..lol I got some new photos today and will show them when I upload them , there rear and front shots ! Virginia, By the pics, I'd say you have a mare in foal You are so lucky....I have a mare that I've been trying to get in foal for years and years and she has never got pregnant once in her whole life and she is now 13 years old. Same deal...no medical reason for her not to get in foal, she just doesn't. I have tried 4 different stallions with her over the years, and nothing. And with her age now, I'd say my chances are even slimmer that it will ever happen. And it really sux because she is my baby, I just love her to peices and I really want just one foal out of her, but oh well. But, I think YOUR mare IS going to have a baby |

Like you Virginia, I continue to peer at my mare on a daily basis. Her LBD was 5/19/04 and she has never come back into season, and when she's in season, you know it! I ordered a preg test from Vally Vet and did it late in July and it came back positive. I have three geldings and a two year old stallion and she rejects all of them. Her bottom line is droopy, but she looks about the same from the rear view as your mare. I go from thinking, "Oh, she's definately pregnant!" to thinking, "Oh, she's just fat!" I keep hoping she is in that in between stage. She's a big bodied mare, 15.3h, different from my 14.2 QH mare who looked like the Pillsbury Dough Boy for months before she foaled! Good luck and keep us posted. Janelle |

greetings. I just about feel over myself when I found this site. I have a mare that was doing about the same...a roll everynow and then. started swelling...alot! Vet checked her but said that he didn't feel anything but thought she has a growth. Everytime he tried to go to the right side she kicked at him a bit. She was not happy. Well that growth is growing FAST! Her bottom line is really low with a point in the middle heading south. And wide...oh man. Her bags are enlarged...everyone says she's in foal. Her back has dropped...and she eats...but really picky. And has been a bit of a gromp. I don't have pictures. But I so hope she's having a baby and not a growth. |

Hi Gynna...shoot I am not sure. I am just happy that she doesn't have cancer. Dang! She's 18 and when I got her I was told she came with a breeding to their black and white paint. I told them I could do without the breeding...I guess someone forgot to tell me...TO LATE! Shoot I have been looking around for funding for an operation for her. She's my therapy horses as well as my girl. But man she's worse than I was when I was carring my son...her taste changes from day to day...and hahaha that might happen before she finshes her meal. Hey any pointers???? |

OHHHH is it better to have clean straw as bedding or would chips/shavings be ok? How big of stall is the best size? |

Judi...My mare is 8 1/2 months and her moods change frequently. One morning I have to drag her out of the barn and fight her to get her into the pasture. The next day, she won't go in the barn. She follows me around like a puppy and then she walks away while I am brushing her. Shes devours her food and won't eat the next meal. It has become our family joke to bet on what new quirk she will develop for the day. I asked the same straw/shavings and stall question so I can give you the most popular answer I received. At least 12 X 24 on the foaling stall and the lower part needs to be solid to avoid drafts, but the top needs to be well ventilated. Straw is considerably better with the only drawback being that some horses will eat it like hay. The shaving hold more bacteria and the small particiles can acutally enter the mare during foaling. While the solid particles are expelled with the placenta, the bacteria is already absorded and can lead to infections. Also, the foal will lay down a lot and the sawdust and particles can be breathed in causing respitory problems. I hope your suprise turns out healthy and wonderful! Thanks Kathee...I really hope she has a heathy foal. There is something that I am wondering about. The vet gave her a shot because she was sweeling. So I do wonder about that. And it didn't help by the way. Sounds like my Cassie girl. She was so distress about what stall she was in that when I moved the girls out she ran into it and that's it! But I know one thing...I need to find a better place for her to foal. The best I can do is a 12x12. I have a 7 month old filly and she's a bit confussed also. Dry cob...wet...but always the winner...apples. But like I said...it's better than cancer! |

If you have a horse that is eating the straw, you can sprinkle it lightly with a diluted pine-scented disinfectant, which will strongly discourage eating it! You don't need to make it wet, just very lightly sprinkled - enough to leave a [nasty] taste behind. |

Judi..sorry hun..I am going through this with a 2 yr old maiden mustang mare that was given to us VERY prego a few months ago..now she is a grump and thinks she is starving to death( she has gained a much need 15olb since being with us). I like my mares to foal out in the foaling turnout. They are less stressed and I am right there with them. She may be the only one that will stay in a stall as my other broodmares have always foaled out in pasture! They get plenty of free choice hay too as well as good quality grain and pasture. I can say that the vet thinks my broodmares are in better shape then most horses( they have had 7 foals a peice and are 12 and 14!)I also add 3 oz of apple cidar vinagar in all my horses feed. Does their digestive system good and they tend to drink more water. as for bedding in the stalls. I have to use hay since you cant get straw done here( I have tried for 3yrs!)Or large wood chips( not sawdust) and my stalls open up to 12 x 24...good luck hun and let us know when she foals and what it is.. |

Well this is going to be something totally new to me.I live on the coast of Oregon and I hope she holds out until the rainy season is over! They are out there with their water wings on as it is. Thank you everyone for your replys. Gynna...my girls get free feed on the grass hays also. And grains 2 times a day. From what I have been reading Cassie will be needing her grains doubled????Does this sound about right? Cassie is alsot bigger than the horse that's picture is posted here. She looks VERY HEAVY in the belly. So I don't ride her anymore. The last time was at last of Oct.Very slow quiet riding...Shoot now I have to let her blanket out more so it will fit around her...and it's an 82-84. Thanks oncer again everyone.PS(sort of)in my letter up top I said she was my therapy horses...she's just one horse and she's mine.I am a 100% disabled veteran. |

Hey Judi, I am from the Oregon Coast and my mom and Best Friend still live in southern Oregon. Yah I was told ya'll are fixing to drown!! We could use some of that rain here! I sont know about doubling the feed. I think much depends on each mare. If you mare is healthy and slick then I would wait until a day or so after foaling to increase her feed a bit..The foals size greatly increases in the last month or so. You may try feeding her three times a day instead of two and increase the amounts by a small degree. My mares get different amounts depending on their body type and if I feel they need it. You dont want your mare overweight either. If she is looking healthy than I would increase some but not Double..a horses tummy only holds a few pounds and over feeding can cause colic. Cant wait to see the new foal though!!! |

Oh Man Gynna...it's pouring here.We lost power last night and it's just now come on...yeap and here I am..:-) Cassie is very healthy looking.I hate to see a horse with ribs showing.I gave a horse to a riding stable that has a therapy program. He was about 200+ underweight. He was given to me.He was well over 16 hands and the sweetest boy.I fattened him up with good food and I even rode him some. But I had Cassie and I knew he was better than just sitting here.He is well loved there. I like my horses to be full bobied. So I will do keep tabs on her.I'm over weight and I know it's better for her to not be.Shoot I would love to send you a picture of her.I have to figure out how to download it.Hubby put in XP and I had ME(I liked it he hated it)but I will try.Maybe you can e-mail me and I can try and send it that way.Or if you have IM or Yahoo. Hey what part of the coast? And I know you sure need the rain there. But doctor wants me to move to a dry area.So maybe around Carson City or someplace. But who knows.I will work on the picture stuff! |
