My mare (don't know when she is due, we purchased her in Sept. and was already pregnant. We didn't find this out until last month. Former owner failed to mention she was with stallion until March or April) has been sweating only at night for the last five nights. The temps. here are near freezing or below. She is outdoors with access to a large run in shelter bedded down with straw. Her bag filled up a week ago, looks sunken down in the tail area and vulva region is elongated. No wax and can't express any milk. She seems very heavy and uncomfortable. Her food intake has dropped off a bit the last few days. However she is passing bowel movements and not biting at sides or seems uncomfortable. Just sweaty. Any ideas or has anyone experienced this with their mares? She is 14 and may be a maiden mare. (Never foaled with previous owner and history unkown before that) Thanks for any help.

Tiffany

Testing the milk is the best way of telling when she will foal. Personally I use FoalWatch, but there are other systems. Also Jos has a great article somewhere on this site about how to tell by observing and tasting the milk.

Your mare may be experiencing a slight colic. Keep an eye on her, you may want to break her feedings up to more frequently. (same total amount of feed, just smaller amounts more often )That way, she does not have a gut full of feed, and a baby!

I would caution you from expressing much milk. You do want to make sure that the "plugs" are out of the teat channel. After she foals, milk her gently untill milk forms froms each teat. There should be two channels on each teat.

Some maiden mares will not produce a bag untill after they have foaled.
