When does it typically start? My mare started to slightly relax at 300 days. I can curry comb her butt and it's wobbly like jelly (sorry for that technical description).
Is this normal? She also had udder edema starting about day 280.
Other than that everything else appears "normal." Could this be too soon? Or maybe an indication of an earlier foaling?

I would say an indication of early foaling. One of my mares in 2004 had udder edema that started about 280 and she foaled at day 323. Her butt hadn't started to relax that early though. But she is one whose butt doesn't really show a lot of relaxation prior to foaling anyway.
You say her butt is wobbly like jelly, but has the tail head become more prominent too?
The average time period to foaling from the noticeable relaxation of the pelvis is around 2-3 weeks.

Sandy, thanks for the reply. To answer your question re the tail head- I think. I see her every day and some times it is hard for me to distinguish if there is a difference or if I'm seeing things.
Her withers, rib cage, and tail head all seem more pronounced to me. She has NOT dropped; however, belly is still nice and tight and verticle rather than horizontal. The area by her tail is most definitely wobblier. Vulva may be a hair (smidgen) more relaxed.

Now- Sunday I noticed what may have been "waxing." Having never seen it other then from B&W pics in foaling books I don't know though. It almost looked like light yellow tinted salt crystals on the tips of her nipples. But her udder in general was crustier that day (washed it off) so I don't know if this was just normal secretion cruddies or "waxing."

Her milk is same as it has been for quite some time- very very watery clear with a slight yellow tinge.

2 weeks from today would put us exactly at 320 days.

I would love your input on what I've described. The vet is coming to do a check on her Friday, so I'll be nagging him as well :-)

Doesn't really sound like true "waxing" to me. More like the normal secretion cruddies like you said.
I like the fact that you're checking her milk. That is such a good indicator of impending foaling. As soon as that milk is no longer watery, then you're getting much closer. Now keep in mind, that can change in 1 day. Her milk can be watery one day, and the next day it can be thick and sticky. I have noticed that the watery milk will take on a darker yellow color before it changes to thick and sticky. So that might be something to watch for. And I have also seen the thick, sticky fluid last for a week before the milk actually starts to turn white. Every mare is different.
Let us know what your vet says Friday :-)

Hi Guys! Just an update from the vet- he thinks she will possibly foal early (in 2 or more weeks) as her nipples were full today, as well. He also pointed out her wobble butt so I wasn't imagining it! Oh the stress! Of course it's freezing and I woke up really sick this morning- what a nasty time of year!
Wish us luck ;)
