My mare is about 9 months along, and I need to know, WHAT EXACTLY is fescue grass, and WHEN do I need to take her off it? Is it absolutely vital that she eats no fescue grass at all after whenever it is you need to take her off? I live in Edmonton area of Alberta, Canada. Also, I understand she can't have any fescue hay, either. So, what kind of hay is the best (She doesn't need very rich hay). Also, If she gets even the tiniest bit of fescue will she get the poisining? I'm quite concerned about this, as even in the dirt pens she can get at grass that is over the fence.
Another thing, from what I've read on here, it's not anything to worry about if a mare acts like she is in heat even when she is pregnant? She was acting this way toward my other horse, who she apparently doesn't realize is a gelding, not a stallion (they were seperated by a fence) He has absolutely no stallion instincts whatsoever and was laying his ears back and biting (just pinching the skin) her butt which she kept turning to him with an uplifted tail and was also trying to urinate. She only flinched at the bites and just stood there. I took my gelding away from the fence because he really was not appreciating her behaviour and I didn't want him to actually take a chunk out of her. Is this okay? They have been kept together for a while during which she never acted like this, but I recently seperated them because they became quite good friends and got upset when seperated so I'm trying to 'wean' them off each other because it's quite annoying when taking one of them for a ride.
Anyway, I just wanted to make sure this is okay. Also, just one more question, should I deworm my mare before foaling, I have read recent posts about deworming after foaling, but what about before, and what is good to use? Quest I have heard is safe but I know certain people who just don't think it works. It's just an opinion but what does everybody else think? We have dewormed our other horses (just the one mare is pregnant) and it's time for her deworming too, I'm just not sure about it. Thanks for any info people can give me.
Cinder, hi! if your mare is still on fescue I would take her off of it now . I had a mare that was on fescue and my vet told me at 7 months to take her off of it and put her on a other kind of grass hay.about the heat thing my mare is over due about a week and she is showing signs of being in heat so I would say yes that can come into heat when pregnant. I would deworm your mare one month before she is due. hope all turn out let me know lisa
