I was wondering anyone has had any experience with their pregnant mares having a slight discharge that is clear mixed with a very small amount of blood (about a drop). For the past week my mare has had this off and on. She is at about 9.0-9.5 months. Should I be concerned about a placenta infection? If so, should I get the vet out to prescribe some antibiotics?
Thanks.

I did and at about the same time too, but I only saw it once. My mare is due in a few weeks. I called my vet out right away and although he didn't give me a reason, he said not to worry. In your case I would also call the vet due to the frequency of the discharge. Hope this helps...also try and save it for the vet. :-)

Just an update in case anyone else had the same problem (this is KAS, i cant remember my password!): had the vet out a few weeks ago and he said that the blood was just vericose veins bursting from the foal gettting larger. He palped her to make sure her cervix was tight... it was... and felt the foals two feet. Said they were big! Anyway, everything is normal. I just moved here so I also asked my vet at home for her opinion on it, and she said the same thing. Thank goodness! My mare just passed the 310 day mark yesterday. Can't wait- I am very excited but scared too as this is my first foal!

I had the same problem in my mare too. it started with bout 3 months to go. anyway we saw the vet and he said it was probably just a varicose vein too. two months later the mare aborted the foal a month early and it died. the next year we put her in foal again and kept a very close eye on her and again she started showing the same symptoms again. imediately we put he on penacilin courses monthly and regumate. happily we now have a beautiful palimino filly and healthy mare. so just letting you know its not always something so simple.

My mare is four weeks from foaling and is having a clear/orange colored discharge. I am worried. Should I call the vet or is this just her getting ready to foal?

Jeanie: I would contact your vet. A discharge in a mare in foal could be a vaginitis, placentitis, or any other type of uterine infection which could cause abortion! It is better to be safe than sorry!
