I am wondering if it is safe to feed a 5 month pregnant mare Bran Mash. I know you are suppose to feed the Bran Mash after she gives birth. But I was wondering if it were safe to do so when she is carrying the foal?

I have been told by my breeder who has alot of mares that he feeds his mares while pregnant wheat bran to bring their milk in. I am at this time trying it with my 5 year old mare who is 12 1/2 months and we have no milk yet. We just got a bag this past couple of days. So I dont think that feeding wheat bran will hurt a pregnant mare or he would not be feeding it to his own. Good luck. Angela in OK

It is a good thing to feed mares bran for a couple of weeks before they foal and for a week after, but excessive use can cause problems with calcium absorption. This is one of those things that I read a long time ago, but can't remember where I read it. I was feeding my mares bran after foaling to use up a huge amount I had left over. Perhaps one of the veterinarians can comment on this.
