Hello All. I am looking for advice on transporting our colt to Keuring in August. He will be 2 1/2 mths old. Are there any sites, books, or articles you suggest?
Thank you

When I had questions on transporting a young foal, I talked to my vet. He was actually able to give me some really good suggestions on the things that the foal would need and how to make him more comfortable during the trip and to make sure that he would stay healthy. The one thing that he definitely recommended was that the foal get plenty of electrolytes prior to and after the trip.

I also have a question about trailering a foal. I have to trailer my 3 1/2 month old filly a short distance (10 km) to our new farm. The first attempt at loading didn't work well and resulted in both the mare and filly being quite stressed. How can I load and transport this pair safely and relatively stress free?
The filly has been halter broke since her first week and is generally an easy going, agreeable baby. The mare is my former competition horse and normally trailers like a pro. The trailer is a three horse angle haul with an optional ramp. At the moment it is parked in the pasture so baby can get used to the looks of it or climb in if she wants to.
Any advice how to get them home?

Have you taken out the dividers to make it like a stock trailer? We trailered my mare (who is an "uneasy" hauler) and her 4 mo old filly back in August. We started a few weeks before trailering by taking the filly up to the trailer with her grain at feeding time. first we fed her with her front feet on the ramp, then all four feet, then halfway in the trailer, then all the way in the trailer, just to get her used to it. It was a warmblood size 2 horse bumper pull. The day of the move we took out the divider. Tied the mare like we normally would, but left the filly free. With a 3 horse slant, you may be able to use it like a stock and leave them both free, or one tied. It worked pretty well. Filly started the trip on one side of her mother, and finished on the other, but neither were nervous or sweaty when they got to their new home. Don't know if that helps, but it worked for us...good luck
