My maiden mini mare finally foaled. Placenta delivered attached to baby (completely intact). Not much hemorrhaging in mare considering. She stopped dripping within the hour. Baby very slow, not able to nurse, tubed, thankfully now doing well. However, when vet examined placenta he indicated an area about 4 x 4 inches which was papery thin and hemorrhagic. Said it was not normal and may have been part of the baby's problem, though he didn't expound on that. Didn't look infected and was otherwise a healthy placenta. This was a "whoops" pregnancy, mare is only 3, and obviously not being bred back this year, but I would like to in the future.

Any ideas on this thinned, hemorrhagic area of placenta? Causes? (mare had excellent nutrition and no environmental abnormaliies throughout her pregnancy). She was only 2 when bred by a yearling stallion. Any ramifications for future uterine health?

I have a question about my mares placenta if Jos could answer please. We examined the placenta which was very healthy, no discloration or parts missing. There was a strange small clear bubble on one part of it that was filled with clear fluid which ran out when we squeezed it. I wasn't here when hubby had vet look at it and vet said placenta was fine but I wanted to know what bubble was. Any ideas? Also wanted to know what color the placenta is usually and how thick should it be?
thanks
teb
