Hello, Keeper, our thorughbred mare is due to foal this week. I'm 13 years old, and my mother was recently put in the hospital, when she found out she had Leukemia. I have to foal this mare out, all by myself, because my dad isn't a horse person. My mother and aunt have given me some tips, but I need all the information I can get. I don't have any books to read, and cannot get any, becasue as soon as they're shipped here, the baby will be born. I'm very anxious about this, and have been sleeping in the barn for over 10 days. One thing Keeper will do is in the middle of the night, she will lie down and make graoning noises, like shes in labor. She will lay down flat, and do that for a few minutes, and then get up and eat some hay. She only does that a few times a night, but I'm worried about her. Any suggestions? I also need to know some more sigs that she might be closer to having her baby, or even in labor, and I'd like to know what could go wrong. Plese help! ASAP!

katrina - most likely your mare will foal all by herself just fine. Try not to worry so much. How many days is she now? 333 days is average but 350 days is not out of the question. What does her bag look like? Is she waxed. If she starts dripping fluid that looks like skim milk she probably is close. She may also rub her rear and kick at her sides. Those are all signs of labor. Do not feel that you have to deliver the baby - DO NOT PULL. You may have to clear the sac from the foals head, but probably not. After the birth - coat the foals navel with betadine or iodine - do this several times throughout the first day or two. Do you have a vet to call? The baby will need shots or an IgG test from a vet.

I know most things to do, when she's ready to foal. I know just to watch, and if something seems wrong, to call a vet, and I have the numbrer for him. I'm not sure how many days she is exactly, but i'm pretty sure she's due on the 7th of june. Yesterday an experienced horse person came out and said she has about a week left before she foals. Aside from laying down, she soemtimes kicks at her stomach and rolled once a few nights ago. He bag is pretty big, but she hasn't started waxing up yet. Thanks for all you help, but I'm still not sure exactly what to do...I need some more help!

katrina - let me repeat, YOU WILL PROBABLY NOT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING! You don't need more help, you just need some patience. Just make sure your mare is in a safe place, have the betadine & the vets number handy. That IS ALL! Good Luck!
