I had a palomino filly born Sunday 5/25/03. At 4 hours old, she started with the scours. I could not reach a vet for another 9 hours or so. I then got her started on antibiotics. My own vet was finally able to draw an IGG on 5/27/03. The IGG was normal. Neither vet has diagnosed this filly. She is doing better now, but looks underweight & awkward moving. She is nursing very good. Has anyone ever experienced this in a foal? This is my 9th foal and the first that I've had a problem with.

i have heard of giving kaopectate,(like pepto bismol)
check with your vet and see what they think of this remedy
or some people recommend deworming the mare post foaling with ivermectin, again-check with your vet.
good luck, and congratulations

Thanks, kel. My filly is doing much better. She has not had diahrea since Wednesday. As we took her & mama to the barn last night, she bucked all the way, lol! I did talk to my vet yesterday & he had been doing some research. He was fairly certain that she did not have a bacterial infection because the scours started so soon. He rather thinks maybe she had a little lactose intolerance. Hopefully it was temporary. Thanks again for caring.

Has anyone ever used Omalene 300 for their mares & foals? My vet recommended that I switch them to this feed. My palomino filly is back to having diarrhea ever since mom started foal heat. That was 9 days ago. She is still very alert, active and growing so my vet says not to worry. He does want me to put her on solid food though.

I fed Omolene 300 , and Omolene 100 (for my other horses), for many years to my late term pregnant mares, to lactating mares and up to first year foals and I am very happy with the feed. Also, I don't have to supplement with any vitamins, so even tho Omolene is more expensive in the long run it is not.

Thanks Ivy - I'm excited about the feed. I get my first delivery today. It will be nice not to have to add vitamins.
