Our TB mare developed a large lump about the size of a baseball in her left flank area a day ago and this morning it has increased in size to about 2 baseballs. Any ideas? We can't get into the vet for a few days because they are so busy.

Hi Karen,
Some mares will develop some edema as they get closer to their foaling date. One of my mares this year developed a huge lump in the flank area about 2 weeks or so prior to foaling. It got pretty big, and then just disappeared one day. It kinda scared me too because it did get so big. I have seen mares who develop edema prior to foaling, but I had never seen one that got that big. But it turned out all was well.
If it's something that you think just "isn't right" then definitely have her seen by your vet.
Good luck.

maybe that explains the lump that appeared on my mare's underbelly. She wasn't as far along, but it just showed up one day and then was gone a few days later. She really didn't show any signs that it was tender when I checked it out.
