My mare stopped eating much of her grain three weeks prior to foaling (she was quite large), and now, 10 days later is eating about 12 cups of mare and foal a day, but lots of hay and water. Is this enough for milk production??? Last year she would eat all I gave her.

Without knowing the quality of your hay, I can only speculate, however, 12 cups is substantial as a hay substitute. If you are concerned, weigh all the food you are giving her and do a protien analysis, including analysisng your hay. Another quick check is to separate your mare and foal for 30-60 minutes (OK just don't let the foal nurse), then check how much milk you get from the mare. You should get about 6 oz. Obviously, the foal will be the ultimate judge, is it growing normally and does it have lots of energy?

At 15 days post foaling, she finally started eating grain again (I was going to have the vet in to check her teeth although they had been done not long ago). I am not sure what was going on. THe foal was not growing like he is growing now! The mare also experienced some diarreah when she started eating again- everything is fine now.
