Hello, I have a mare who is now at 365 days! She was AI'd on April 4th 2002. She has a slight bag, and has had cloudy milk for a week or more. Tonight I can easily express milk that looks like Whole milk with a orange tinge. This mare always goes close to a year, and always bags and drips before foaling, but I don't ever remember her milk having this discoloration?? Could there be something wrong?

Dani, It may be that the milk hasn't totally turned to white yet. Maybe you're still seeing the "honey-colored" pre milk. Or I know there are times when I milk out my mares it will look like there is a little bit of blood mixed with the fluid, but come to find out it's from little bugs biting the udder and causing small scabs on the teats and when I milk them the scabs come off and mix in with the fluid and make it look discolored. As for your mare's small bag, maybe she is just going to wait until she foals to completely fill up this year. I have found that mares won't always follow the same foaling pattern every year. They seem to like to throw something different at you once in a while just to keep you guessing. Let us know how things go.
