my mare is about 5 months pregnant, and yesterday evening I went out to feed and she had urine all down the back of her hind legs and her tail was wet with urine, she urinated in the runin shed when i was bedding it down, and the urine was cloudy yellow colour, but then she stayed "hunched up"for a few minutes longer than usual. Also, I noticed on her hind end it looked as though she had been rubbing her butt up against the boards
I brought her inside for the night to keep an eye on her. and called the vet
He thought maybe she was trying to abort the foal, does anyone have any experience with this? or could it be a urinary tract infection? my vet says horses generally do not get bladder infections, but it's possible that's what it could
be.
Hopefully she is not trying to abort...
what should i look for if this is what is happening.?do they go off their food? etc.
and if it does happen, how long does it take? hours? days?
please pray for me this is my first and only foal i will be having with her
thank you

ksue:
I have had a mare abort at approx. 5 mos. before. She gave absolutely no warning whatsoever that she was about to do so. The only way we even knew she had aborted was the fact that we found the small fetus lying in the pasture with placenta still intact. The mare acted no differently prior to aborting and no differently after aborting.
Sorry I can't give you any more than that.
Good luck.

My mare looks pregnant, but I don't exactly know how to tell if she is having a false pregnancy or is really pregnant!!!!! The guy we got her from said she lost her foal, but then his girl-friend took us aside and said to keep an I on her because she doesn't think my mare lost her foal. My vet is on vacation and I don't want to bather him. Can someone please tell me the difference between false & real pregnancies? My mare now has major relaxation near her tail, profound deepness in front of her hips, and looks like she is about to explode!!!!! Her bag looks as though it has started something. Does she sound pregnant? Thanks

when was she bred?
sounds like she is in foal
could you get another vet out to do a palp.?
otherwise, it could be a waiting game for you....

sorry, i don't know the difference between real and false preg.

Niki,
I think your best bet is to have your vet examine your mare when he gets back from vacation. If your mare doesn't have a bag yet and if she IS pregnant, then you can probably wait until your vet is available. Unless he/she is going to be gone for a month or so.
The only difference between a false and a real pregnancy is, that with a real pregnancy a mare actually delivers a foal. False pregnancies can go along just as though the mare were in foal but she just never delivers a baby. They can get fat, make a bag, make milk, everything, but there is not a foal to be born.
When the guy you bought her from said that she lost her foal, did he tell you that he had it confirmed by a vet? Did he find a fetus? Or is this something that he is just assuming for some reason?
I just think you need to have your mare examined and then you will know for sure.
Let us know what the outcome is!
