A disscussion on another forum is:
Can foals, newborn handle the colder weather that comes with breeding early in the year?

My mare is due March 1st. I live in The Netherlands, around that time the temp gets up to about 10 degrees celsius during the day, and a little colder, but not below freezing at night.

I am not at all concerned, but others seem to think the foal will not be able to go outside!

Personally I was thinking of not letting the foal out during the rain, but otherwise, no problem?

What is your experience? Anybody ever had a sick baby due to the cold?

From what I've always been told and have heard is that a foal will do fine in the colt weather as long as it has shelter from the wind and wetness. It is the wind that will do the most damage.
I have heard horror stories of people who have said that their mare foaled during real cold spells and when they found the foal in the morning, or whatever, they would find a dead foal, frozen to the ground. Now whether that had anything to do with foaling during the cold or not, I don't know.
I have had young foals that would come down with colds during cold weather bouts, coughing, runny noses, but usually one visit with the vet and being put on antibiotics takes care of the problem.
I think as long as your newborn has shelter to get out of the rain and wind, he should be fine.

sorry, I meant COLD weather, not COLT weather, a little slip of the fingers there I guess!
