I have a beautiful paint mare that is abnormally smart. I live in a remote area of Canada and have no access to registered stallions to breed. I am not a novice to horsing but i am not expirienced with breeding. I have been doing my research and i have found a variety of opinions on key issues. My mare is in her 3rd year. I have no plans to breed her soon as i am still conducting my research and building my personal facility. Could someone please tell me when is the safe and appropriate age to begin breeding mares. Is there a real chance of losing the mare and foal. I should mention that this mare is bery precious to me, as she is the most remarkable horse i have ever seen). I do want to breed her for her characteristics but am afraid of losing this very special animal. Open to suggestions.

Dawn it is my own personal opinion that you should not breed a mare til they are at least 4yrs old... but there are some people out there who will tell you it is okay to breed a 3yrold.
And with pregnancy this is always a risk for loss of mare and foal... but generally healthy mares do not have problems.
I was told when I bred my mare to have her insured just incase ( she was 5yrs old when she was bred) She did fine...
talk with your vet about the risk factors.. have him examine your mare to make sure she is sound for breeding and then think it over some more...
