We have jest bot a mare that is due in october 2002 and the people that we bot her from never gave her any shots. What should I do? She is 14 and has had one other foal last year.
One other question I am buying a 24 year old tennessee walking mare that I was thinking of breeding is it safe for her?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only innoculations that are critical as far as the pregnancy is concerned are Rhinopneumonitis, which should be given at 5, 7 and 9 months of pregnancy. You should therefore give the final dose now as she is at 7 months, and keep your fingers crossed... Other innoculations can be given as is suitable for your area.

There is no significant reason why you should not breed an older mare simply related to her being older, but you should have a thorough pre-breeding veterinary work-up to ensure she is healthy reproductively and that there are no problems.

I have a similar problem as the above Judith. We bought a 2 yr old filly in August and noticed that she didn't come into estrus, but then it was fall. Put a saddle on her 2 months ago--whoa! this gal is pregnant! She was running with a herd and not even halter broke when we got her. She's had no vaccinations. Yes, we can use pneumo-bort that will help her pregnancy. However, my real worry is that there will be a lack of disease antibodies in her colostrum. Should I considered getting colostrum from a super-immunized source?

Judith She should rec her yearly shots again 30 days prior to her foaling date.. Talk with your vet and see if you two can come up with the best estimate on when she will foal...

Also the vet can draw some blood from the foal at birth right after nursing and run a test for antibodies to see if the foal has rec'd enough protection from the colostrum..

Good Luck
