We bred our roan qh stallion to a paint mare, who's dam sire is half brother to the stallion, the foal born last year, had a very silky fine, almost curly coat, no hair in her ears and generally looking premature, although she was three weeks late, the foal now a yearling red roan filly, has terrible coat condition, bald patches, it doesnt grow very well, is very tough and sparse, she is fine in herself and is growing normally, we had thyroid and skin tests done, gbut this didnt show a thing, and then this year, the same stallion when put to a daughter of his full brother has foaled a red roan filly like the above, does anyone have any idea why or what could have caused this??? we will not be making these crosses again, the stallion, has not been used on relatives before, and as far as we are aware this has not happened to any before, any information or thoughts would be very much appreciated, vets and everyone we have had look, cannot come up with anything
