We have a mare in foal that started having periodic bloody discharge at day 321. It is now day 324 and it is still happening usually once a day. We just notice a large spot of blood on the straw and she will usually have a little on her leg. She started bagging about a week or so ago. Vulva started lengthening about the same time and swelling some. Now, however, the vulva swelling has collapsed while it has lengthened more. This mare is also very much overweight. Tried cutting her feed back 4 or 5 months ago but vet said to pick it back up because the baby needed the nutrients. She has been put up in two stalls due to concerns about fescue since mid-January so not a lot of excersize. The stalls are 12x24 and 12x36 so she can move around quite a bit. Doesn't do much moving though she is so fat.

I live in rural area and have been trying to get a vet since the first sign of blood but my vet has been sick and said she would probably be alright if she is not straining or nothing "hanging out". Has anyone experienced anything like this? This is 19 yr old brood mare that last foaled three yrs ago.
thanks, Rick

We have an older mare that bleeds throughout her pregnancy. We put her on Vit k-c and selenium with e.The vet says it is varicose veins.Sometimes there is a large puddle of blood were she has layed down.Tis mare has done this off and on for 3 yrs..She is 22 and on her 15th foal.Foals have been fine and once she foals there usually is no more bleeding...Still,it is unnerving to see blood in the stall...

You are right, it is unnerving. This mare sounds like yours. But she is at day 335 and has quit the bleeding. She is starting to wax just a very little. The poor thing is so huge I feel sorry for her. The vet checked her and said the bleeding was nothing to worry about. This last couple of weeks are long for sure.

We have a bouncing baby filly! Very light colored sorrel and is the biggest baby ever born I believe or so says my 84 year old neighbor who has doctored horses all his life. Anyway, mom and baby fine and doing well. If I didn't miss the days it was born at day 436 at 4:15PM. Guess I was a little paronoid about the bleeding couple of wks ago but this is our first time at this.

Well, I thought I corrected my statement about how far along the mare was but that msg must not have gotten through. Of course the number of days was 336 rather that the 436 that I mis-typed in my last post.

We have a 7 year old mare that just had her fourth foal. This was the first year that she started bleeding during the last month of pregnancy. We noticed that it was only when she was laying down and 'hanging out' as you so aptly put it, Rick. We could actually see the blood trickling out over the folds of tissue and our vet said it was likely due to the pressure and blood vessels breaking. When she stood up, everything went back inside and the bleeding would stop. Her foal was 24 days early and there were no complications. Congratulations on your filly!
