She is at 330 days at this point. Should I be concerned if she eats the straw???

No do not be too concernered about mom eating her straw. My mares do it all the time. Just make sure that there is enough straw in her stall in case she delivers when you are not there.

If she is usually bedded in straw and use to it, I would not be too concerned. I do watch carefully if one has not been eating straw and then decides to. Make sure that she gets her excercise, and has free access to good hay.

I am joining this discussion late and the first post I see is dated 9:03 am, March 28. I assume I missed the first part of this discussion. My question to add is: What type of straw is suitable and do you normally have to worry about any of the forbidden fescue being in the straw?

I live in Atlantic Canada and do not believe "fescue" to be a problem here; someone correct me if I am wrong. I did put my mare on straw, although I was afraid she might eat it and colic, but she hasn't seemed to. I gave her so much hay the first night, and had so much straw on the floor, there were "mountains" of it the next morning as she moved it all around...My mother saw this the next day and innocently asked if mares made "nests" to give birth..... :) I am still trying to get the "knack" of it-less straw. (can you tell I have never done this before?) Still no baby.......
