I just had a foal born on Wednesday, March 13th, and I am wondering the soonest I should worm the mare and foal, and with what wormer. Also, what vaccines should be administered and when....this mare had not been vaccinated for over a year.

Thank you. Kelly

I would get your mare a good 7 way or 8 way vaccine asap, (EWE/TET/FLU/Rhino) for the basics. check with your vet to see what else you need to vaccinate for in your area, and what time would be appropriate. I'd also recommend worming the mare with ivermectin asap, IF she had a normal, easy delivery. (If complications check with vet).
The vet's around here like to worm foals with panacur at around 1 month of age, and then again each month until one year, rotating wormers. I usually wait a few months before beginning a worming schedule. Vaccines for foals have traditionally been given around 4-6 months of age, however there is new research comming out and now they seem to be recommending you wait until at least 8 months. Contacting your vererinarian is probably your best course of action.

Just for future reference, it would be best to vaccinate and worm your mare within 30 days of foaling. That way the foal will benefit from her antibodies.

Congratulations on your new foal!
