I really am hoping someone might be able to help me with something im a little confused about. I have a 12yr maiden quarter horse mare that is 331 days pregnant. She has been bagged up since the end of June, I know this because she went from having absolutely nothing to looking full. She started off having small amounts of stuff that looked like pre-milk and then it started getting to be larger amounts of stuff dripping from her teats. She would wax up then it would dropp off and she would leak. Then it got to where her back legs would constantly have dried milk on the insides of them. I had my vet come and a do an exam on her on the 20th of july and she said everything was looking good and that even though she is leaking milk that it probably wasnt colostrum yet and probably nothing to worry about. And when I asked her why she seemed to be so generous with the stuff that leaked out especialy her being a maiden she said she just could possibly have very large openings on the ends of her teats. I am just so worried I am going to end up with a foal that doesnt have enough colostrum . Can anyone give me any info that might help? Thanks so much. KIMI

This is something to be concerned about. There are some articles at the main board of this site that can help. I would suggest catching some and saving it for the foal. There are instructions in the articles explaining how it is done. I would take this seriously and prepare for any problems. Better safe than sorry !

I would like to know of any Colostrum Banks in existece and how to join them. I raise Paints and have kept a colostrum bank for years. I live in northen Wisconsin. I thought there might be other interested people out there who might like to correspond. SUE R. NETTLETON LASU PAINTS 1100 W. GLEN CRANDON, WI. 54520 lasu@newnoth.net

Sue, It might be a good idea to contact your vet service or maybe the Paint Assa. or hourse council in your state. There is bound to be someone in need of it this upcoming season. For more information on this I think Sandys Nursemare Service in N.Y. can help you 845-988-5265 or E-Mail her at rentsiklensan@webtv.net
