I have a mare 14h that had a colt out of a 15.3hand stud. The colt will be a year old May 6. But he is only about 12hands. Is he going to be just his mothers height? At first sight you'd think he was about 6 months old. Built great, but short. My questions are: Is there a supplement to help, could something have kept him from reaching his sire's height(the mare was in poor shape when purchased;colt 1month old) or has is it just a 50-50 chance on heights.

Horses grow until their 6th year, so simply because he's only 12 hh now doesn't mean he'll stay that height!
Typically a cross such as yours will result in a foal slightly higher than the mare, so you could possibly anticipate 14.2 or so.
Good luck and be patient!

Gosh. My colt is 11hh and he was just born today. I'm afraid he might end up taller than his dam who is 17hh. Hopefully not. 17hh is tall enough.
Have you ever heard of measuring a horse to see it's growth "potential"? Try it on a grown horse first to see how it works. Take a string and measure from the point of hock to the point of elbow. This is all the leg except from hock down. Then bring the end at the hock point up to the point of withers. Allowing room for chest to fill out, these measurements should be equal to each other. Gives you a good estimate.
while stunting is possible of course from early and undetected illnesses in baby colts it is also quite possible that the mare herself had some tiny near up ancestors...in our welsh ponies we understand that it is possible to have 12 hand ponies out of 14 hand ponies as the g-dam of said pony carried smaller genes than the sire...which is the single biggest reason I don't generally like to add crossbred anythings into my mare herd...as the chance for way off type offshoots is compounded with each additional new bloodline..
Height is a crap shoot. Be careful not to overfeed your horse in order to try to increase size this could cause developemental problems. Has this boy been on a good deworming program???
