OSTEOCHONDRITIS DISSECANS (OCD). Cartilage disorder characterized by the presence of large flaps of cartilage or loose cartilaginous bodies within a joint. According to two of the most respected authorities on the subject C. Wayne McIlwraith, BVSc, PhD Dean of surgery at Colorado State University and Larry Bramlich, D.V.M of Rood & Riddle in Kentucky. Are both of the opinion that, marginal therapeutic benefits can be expected from the use of inter-articular injections of Hyaluronic acid. The therapeutic benefit however is directly related to the location of the lesion in the joint. To date the most effective treatment has been surgical removal of the lesion, via arthroscopic curratage.
Although there is a school of thought that nutritional inadequacies are a major contributing factor in predisposing a horse to OCD lesions. If in fact this is true, changing the nutrition after the lesion exists would have no significant effect either way. Maintaining proper nutrition however will help to enhance recovery of the animal after surgery.
