Hi, I'm going to attempt an ET from my WB mare this season. I am a 2 day LONG trip from the AI centre so will be taking my mare to the clinic & leaving her there while she is bred & flushed. I'm going to use one of the clinic's recipient mares & "IF" we get a 14-16 day positive preg test- how long should I look at leaving the recipient mare there for before bringing her all the way home?
I don't want to bring the donor or recipient mare home too early in case the recipient mare slips early on. Is there are supposed "safe" or "unsafe" period for traveling mares early in a pregnancy???
Typically the rule of thumb is that if the weather is cool and the mare travels well, you can ship her any time. If the mare doesn't travel well, or if you have concerns, shipping after about 45-60 days of pregnancy is possibly safer.
The major concern is the mare overheating, especially during the early embryonic and embryonic periods. If the weather is hot, then it is advisable to ship at night.
