She is healthy, just had a foal, is a great mother. I'm looking online at the ET places, and they want to use their donor mares, and leasing one is most of the cost of ET! I understand that a mare has to be on the same cycle as the donor mare, but couldn't the recipient be short cycled or the embryo frozen until the recipient cycles? I don't want to lease a mare when I have a perfectly good mare here.
There is no reason why you could not use your own mare as long as your technician is capable of transferring the embryo, and as long as you synchronize the mare. The "on line ET places" that you are looking at are offering a specific service - mare rental for shipped embryos.
You will need accurate synchronicity - the use of prostaglandin to short cycle a mare is not going to be reliable enough. P&E is generally recommended. Freezing the embryo (if one is indeed flushed - remember that is always a risk!) may be an option, but most "general practice" ET technicians are not going to be capable of it, so you will have to determine that first.
