I bought a mare about 5 years back and she had an 'accident' but that 'accident' is the best thing I ever had. A beautiful 15.1 hand Paint Mare, she is now 4 years old with the greatest personailty for a family horse. I want to have another horse, but I have decided to breed this mare to a beautiful 15+ Palomino Paint Stallion whom I also picked out for the laid back personality. I want to breed her sometime around May 20th. Would this be about right if she was last in heat around March 13th? I do not know anything about breeding, we have cattle but it all happens naturally and on their time. I want to be prepared and send her to the stallion at the right time. Any info would be greatly appreciated! |

May 1st would be more like it, depending on if she was at the end or beginning of her cycle in March. I'd take her to the stallion in advance, so she can have time to settle in, and get used to her surroundings as well. Otherwise, you may miss a breeding and be stuck leaving her another month. |

From the way she was acting I believe that she was at the end of her cycling. Same as my other mare (who thinks my other mare are stallions). Anyways, I was also told to give her a shot of F2alpha Prostaglandin 4 days befor she goes to the stud and she would be ready and only have to be there for 8 days. Does anyone know anything about this drug and does it really work? |

The shot does not always work! I agree with Diana and take her eairly, however if money is tight you can wait until the first day of her cycle then take her. Horses usually don't ovulate until the last day or two of the cycle and average a 7 day cycle, so breeding her on the first day is not necessary and even a waste of the stallion. But for your mares benefit it is best to take her earily if possible, it decreases her stress and increases her chances of conceiving on the first try. |
