Hi All,

I was wondering when is it considered normal for a mare to start bagging before foaling? My mare is 8 weeks before her due date and now she really seems to be filling in down there. Its not noticable if you look up there but you can definately feel that she is starting. How soon before delivery should they start bagging up?

Thank you,
Brittany

She's right on time Brittany! My mares in the same timeframe are beginning to get puffy down there too.
Best of luck with your mare and foal this year!!

Ok good. Just a little worried because last year we had a lot of problems when it came to her bagging so I don't know what is normal. Thank you for the relief.

It varies a lot from mare to mare, some will bag up a couple of months before hand and some won't bag up at all.
I believe once the wax 'corks' appear on the ends of the nipples they'll usually foal within 24 - 48 hours but not every mare gets these.
Also gestation can vary from around 340 - 370 days (depends on which source for exact) so they have a very loose due date.

My mare started bagging up about 2 months before she foaled, but her udder only really filled out in the last 2 weeks. In saying that however, she never really got that big an udder. I checked her about 8pm last night and thought she was still a few days away from foaling, as pics iv seen of due mares udders were much fuller looking. But what do you know she foaled early this morning :-)! No waxing and her teats weren't that full/tight looking. Some mares just like to keep us guessing

I looked at yellow house ranch and my mare is right on track this time.Phew. Last year she started bagging in December and she wasn't even due until the end of March. Then she had wax on one teat at 295 days. On day 305 she had full blown wax on both. This was the signal in the past for her that she was going to foal within 3 days so I was in panic mode. Turns out she decided to leak milk for 2 more weeks after that before she finally decided to foal. So it just goes to show that you never know what is going to happen with these mares. LOL
