Hi everyone, 2 questions for you. #1...I was told my stallion's semen needs to be evaluated before he breeds. A couple people told me to this now (while he's 3) rather than next year when I go to breed him, simply because if his semen is no good, I might as well geld him now. (although I can't imagine it not being good!) BUT, I was advised by many people to NOT breed him until he's BROKE BROKE BROKE (that means going nice and clamly w/t/c under saddle consistently) which now, he is not. I was told breeding can "change" a stallion, and if I breed (or have him "collected" because technically whether the mare is real or not he's still "breeding")before he's broke under saddle he'll go crazy. is this true??

Also, can someone enlighten me about stallion liability coverage and insurance? do all of you who own stallions carry insurance (not mortality or major medical, I am talking about specific stallion insurance)--I am assuming it covers if a stallion gets loose at a show, accidentally breeds another mare, injuries another horse, etc. I am not sure (duh, which is why I'm asking!) But I was told also I should get stallion coverage for him.

Thanks so much for the info!!!
Laura :-)

Laura
its a good thing to take him to the vet and have him trained on the phantom (if your planning on doing AI) and have his semen checked out. If its his first time being collected it make take several collections before you get a good sample of it. I would go ahead and do it, and if it comes back not to good after about 4 collections, then dont fret, check him again next year. Semen usually gets better as they get older. Dont up and geld him for one down season, wait a year and check him out a again. As far as him changing, I would not worry about it much unless you have not been working him. In that case you may want to get him listening to you first, but he does not have to be broke, just knows who is the boss.

We have insurance on all our horses, we do not worry about him hurting a mare as we only do AI and never do live cover and always triple check his stall to make sure its locked.
