We recently acquired an older stallion. We do have experience in breeding stallions.
I was attempting to put his halter on in a large outdoor arena and he grabbed my arm - bit me and then tried to drag me with him when he turned and ran off. The bite was bad enough to need stitches.
Two week later my husband was leading him out of the round pen and he bit him in the stomach area. He pins his ears back when we pass his stall. I believe someone (not us) has done something to this guy at some point . . . he was pasture bred several years ago. He's also an aggressive breeder in that he acts as if there is no handler there when breeding. We don't wish to sell him without disclosing this information . . . we were not told about him prior to getting him.

Is he a decent riding horse? Could/would he make a better Gelding?

There are ways to get around his problem, that would give you time to work with him to see if he improves.

What were your plans for him?

What type of facilities do you have?

How often can you get out to work with him?

How many mares can you breed him to next year - in order to work on his breeding manners?

Is he really worth putting the time in to, to see if you can correct his behavior? Keeping in mind the dangers involved in trying to fix him?

Very long story.... We too had a stallion cross our path, very aggressive! Put me in hospital as well. We discovered it was down to his feed... I know sounds ridiculous... we had to take all starches (grain, oats, etc) out of his diet. We feed a pelleted ration with extruded fat (that is the key) to keep him calm... he is starch intolerant! Try it... all the hay he can eat, fat source (veggie oil, pelleted fat, prilled or extruded) and no starch, watch the GI level in the feed. It was everything he needed, he was a different person in about a month!!! you can email me for particulars if you like. aurora@jam21.net I will be happy to share.
It worked, I bought him! I also went to work, make my living saving stallions like this from a nutrition stand point, as well as many other horses in performance etc.
