We imported a young (3yr old) stallion and he will have to breed 2 mares for the requirements of the quarantine. For this purpose, we purchased two mares and had them approved by the official vet after required tests. Both were green, purchased on the field (5 and 3yr old) 3 weeks ago, but are doing very good right now. Saddlebroke and acceptable ground manners in the circumstance.
The quarantine site is a small private 4 box stable where he will be kept with the 2 mares and a 3rd one that is already pregnant and imported with him. The only exterior field approved for the 60 expected days of the quarantine is a 200X100ft well fenced working area.
We are both (girlfriend and I) experienced with horse handling, training and riding at average competitive levels, but totally unfamiliar with this situation as to have to deal with a green stallion and 3 mares in the same restricted area for the next 2 month.
I would appreciate counseling from experienced horsemen and breeders with the eventual problems that can be expected from this situation, how to deal with them, and a short "do and don't" list.
Thanks for quick answers, the imported horses are waited this week.
