Friends have a 3 year old QH stallion that simply will not mount a mare. He has great libido, becomes fully erect but simply will not jump. They attempted to breed him on 2 occasions as a two year old and were unsuccessful for the same reason. It was put down to immaturity.

This year they have tried on several occasions to live cover very experienced cooperative mares with no success. Our vet suggested they try to collect him. She felt that the mount being stationary would be simpler for him to jump and the AV would provide the immediate "reward". The theory being that if this was successful he would understand the point of mounting and then perhaps be willing to live cover. We just finished trying that, also unsuccessfully. He almost tried at the very beginning, but not even a slight attempt after that. Just when you think he was about to jump up he would seem to change his mind and give a hop and kick with the back feet.

Ground collecting is not really an option for the owners so I hesitate to start that as I am not sure it will help teach him to mount. Pasture breeding is not really an option as they would like to show him in future and don't want to risk injury.

We have worked with alot of different stallions and never had this problem.
Any suggestions?

It sounds like this stallion might be experiencing some pain when he tries to mount and that is why he won't do it.
I would have him checked for some back problems or rear leg problems or maybe even the hips.
Because it sure sounds like he wants to, but something is preventing him from going fully up.
