At what age is a stallion too old to start breeding? I'm looking at an older (17 yr. old) Arabian stallion who has never been bred before. The current owner has done a sprem count and had the semen evaluated. I'm awaiting result of the tests. I'm just wondering if he is just too old to start now. He has an amazing show record as well as his sire and dam were great show horses he just never been bred.
With such an outstanding record, why was he never used?
As long as he's fertile & otherwise in good health, he's not too old. (I'm assuming he is stallion material.) I would be watchful of any indications of pain (due to arthritis or other age-related problems) when going to mount. Like any young new stud, learning proper manners is of utmost importance. Good luck with him if you do decide to get him.

I was told that the owner didn't want to bred him until he had a National Champion. He already has a Res. Champion at Nationals but I guess that wasn't good enough. Anyhow I've decided on not buying for other reasons. Thank you.
