There is a stallion in the stables that I board at that I am considering breeding my mare to however he hasn't been bred before. My mare has been bred once.
I asked the owner of the stallion how would she do it and she said just let them loose in a small pasture. The owners of another stallion (full brother to the first one) has to hand breed because he is too rough on the mare. So which is better?

Would Not allow pasture breeding on a Stallion who has not been taught proper breeding manners. And even with one that has would still suggest hand breeding over pasture breeding and AI over any live cover ( hand or pasture breeding). (unless the breed is Thoroughbred were only live cover is allowed)
If this Stallion Owner does not know how to handle her stallion in the breeding shed she should find someone who does; before you consider breeding your mare to him.
Her Statement " just let them loose in a small pasture" is a recipe for trouble..that is just my opinion though.

i agree with elizabeth. it sound like the owner is not conserned for the well being of either of the horses. ( if the mare injures the stud then he might not be able to breed.) there is a mare at my barn that was injured by a stallion that got to rough and she was ruined as a brood mare.
i do not allow my mare to be bred unless it is hand breeding.
