I have a smaller stallion, around 15 hands. He's very well behaved but seems like he has trouble reaching the taller mares. I have tried to dig a hole, have even built a stock to lower the mares for him. He seems to be more afraid of the stock than anything. He just seems to be reaching for the mares and then gets his hind feet under the legs of the mare. Any suggestions? We ended up collecting him to catch the taller mares.
Breed on a suitably steep hill with both the stallion and the mare facing downhill. If the animals move forwards, they both move at the same rate - with a dug hole, when they move forward, as the mare moves out of the hole she "grows", and the stallion is moving into the hole, so he "shrinks".
AI is probably your best bet though. It's not only easier, but it's safer too.
