One of my stallions has somehow learned to masturbate using his water bucket. He scooches back against it & starts moving sideways & back & forth as he drops & starts flapping his penis on his belly & banging against the bucket. I'd just let him do his thing but he's got the hair rubbed off the the top of his dock. When I first noticed the hair being rubbed off, I thought he was itchy or wormy but I've since caught him at his little "activity". Most of the time, he's allowed in & out of his stall at will. Since discovering his habit, I've removed his buckets when his stall door's open since he has 2 tubs outside. Obviously, I can't do that if the door's closed. I've tried moving his buckets to different places in his stall & it worked in the corner for 2 days. I don't care that he masturbates, it's normal, but I do care that he's rubbing all the hair off his tail. Any ideas? Thanks. |

Stallions!! I have two words for you; ground feeder, and water tub! Good luck!!! You may try hanging his buckets lower or higher, so that he can not balance against them. |

I always feed all of my guys in buckets or pans on the ground & their water tubs outside are on the ground. This particular stud has 2 of those muck/party buckets outside for water. A friend suggested trying one of them in his stall but I winced at the thought of the mess if he were to dump it. LOL I guess I'll have to give it a try tho. I just won't fill it until I see what he's going to do with it. He will knock a regular bucket around his stall once it's empty, no matter what kind of hook or clip I use. I don't want to lower the buckets anymore than they are because I'm concerned about him getting a leg caught in one. If it doesn't work with the tub, I'll try putting it up higher. Tho he's very seldom kept in his stall with the door closed, there are occasions when he has to be. He does have a buddy he can rub noses & hang out with. He's just coming 5 so he still has a lot of playbaby in him. Since he only does it on the few occasions he's closed in his stall, I think it's a way he's found to relieve his boredom. That means I need to eliminate his boredom or his means of relieving it in that particular manner. I think the tail rubbing is secondary to the gratification he gets from using the bucket for stimulation. Since the hanging water bucket is the medium he uses, I've removed it. When he's outside, he just uses his belly. On the rare occasions his stall door is closed, I'll try using one of the muck/party tubs & keep my fingers crossed that he doesn't dump it (or in it as he's sometimes wont to do!) |

Hello Vicki, I would suggest wrapping his tail when he has to be stalled. As far as boredom, maybe hang a ball or some safe horse toy to curb his playfulness. Even something to roll in his bucket may help. I have used basketballs in hay nets before. Maybe this will help keep his mind off his fantasy mare! |

Mares and stallions have been known to "rub" thier tail when the area around the teats is dirty for mares or the sheath for stallions a mild dish washing liquid is ok but thier is a liquid sheath cleaner on the market that I have used before with good results .......... Tumbleweed |

I have a 20 yr old gelding that does this. Which is fine but he always does it in front of little kids or old ladies. |

My colt does it all the time! He doesn't use a water bucket, he just hits his belly with his penis. It never fails that he does it when someone is visiting that knows nothing about horses! |
