I HAVE A 5 YR OLD APHA STALLION. HE IS A SUCCESSFUL HUNTER/JUMPER SHOW HORSE, SO HE IS WORKED DAILY AND IS TURNOUT EVERYDAY. HE IS ALSO USED FOR BREEDING. HOWEVER, I AM HAVING A HARD TIME PUTTING WEIGHT ON HIM. I AM FEEDING HIM A 14 PERCENT FEED 3 TIMES A DAY (12 POUNDS OF GRAIN A DAY) AND HE IS GETTING ABOUT 2 FLAKES OF GRASS/TIMOTHY HAY 4 TIMES DAILY. I HAVE EVEN PUT HIM ON WEIGHT GAIN SUPPLEMENTS TO HELP PUT WEIGHT ON. HE IS A GOOD EATER AND HE DOES NOT PACE, SWAY, WEAVE OR WORRY MUCH IN HIS STALL, HE JUST TALKS A LITTLE WHEN HORSES GO BY. HOW DO I PUT WIEGHT ON HIM FASTER? DO STALLIONS JUST DON'T PUT WEIGHT ON AS EASY AS MARES AND GELDINGS DO? ALSO HE IS SUPER QUIET, TOO QUIET TO ME. HE ACTS LIKE HE HAS NO ENERGY!!! I HAVE TO WEAR SPURS AND CARRY A CROP TO JUST KEEP HIM GOING WHEN I RIDE HIM, IS HE JUST A QUIET STALLION? DO YOU THINK IT IS JUST HIS BREEDING? I EVEN HAD BLOOD DRAWN ON HIM, BECAUSE I THOUGHT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH HIM, OF COURSE HIS TEST CAME BACK NORMAL. ANY SUGGESTIONS??

I find that some stallions worry during breeding season and need a little extra help to retain their weight. I use a feed by Acco called Superior. It has double the fat content ,but the same protien. You would probably like their 14-8. It has really made a difference for the horses that I have put on it.
It is nice that you have such a quiet stallion. I understand that you would like a bit more effort from him. You may try a supplement called Red Cell. It boosts the iron content and helps energize some horses. Used as directed, there are no side effects. Enjoy that nice guy you have and good luck with him!

Has he has his teeth floated lately?? I had a stallion who we inheirited who would NOT put on ANY weight. Then, our vet suggested that maybe his teeth needed to be floated. When horses don't chew their food correctly they don't put on weight, maybe you should check it out. CASHGURL
