Joe C, although not common this is not unheard of either. However it is typically not attributed to the stallion, but rather the mare. Upon close vaginal examination, a tear or laceration in the area of the cervix is often found. If however this was a collection rather than a live cover. It could be attributed to either a small broken blood vessel in the urethra or the result of a rotated testicle. Both situations would be considered very rare. Since blood is spermicidal it is very likely that the mare may not conceive on this cover.

I didn't know that blood was spermicidal. I just bred my maiden mare to my stallion, and she bled a little. When I breed her again on day 5 and 7 will she will bleed again? If blood is spermicidal, what are her chances of conceiving on this heat cycle? Thanks, ijr
Ivy there are precious few absolutes when it comes to equine reproduction.
The blood from a small vaginal tear such as a maiden mare who has recently been opened for breeding purposes, or the tearing of the hymen. Is normally not sufficient or far enough into the reproductive tract to have any negative effect on the semen. However blood from a cervical tear or abrasion will usually be fairly substantial and in such a position to be carried into the uterus and mixed with the semen. With the potential to adversely effect the viability of the semen.
Typically stallions with a rotated testicle will produce a pink tinged semen sample and it rarely is enough to totally destroy the entire ejaculate. However it will have an adverse effect to varying degrees on the viability of the semen.

Joe C.- Does this happen everytime that he ejaculates, or was it only one time? Was the mare a maiden mare, or a particularly difficult mare during the breeding process? Had the mare been recently cultured or infused in perparation for breeding?

Joe C - Was the mare covered a third time and all was well? I had this happen one time myself. Everything turned out fine.
