Can you tell me if there are any health problems associated with cryptorchidism aside from potentially lowered sperm count/motility. I understand that in humans, there may be a higher incidence of testicular cancer. I was wondering if this holds true for equines too.

Thank you.

I have always heard that cryptorchidism in dogs usually lends itself towards cancer. Not been studied too much in the horse as most people geld them. I do have have a crypt stallion and he has not thrown any crypt colts and has never had any problems settling mares. I know and understand the associated risks that have been published to no end, but I consider this stallion's quality to be far too high to geld him, and consider the risks minimal at best, JMO. I do keep a history on my stallion's get and mares he's bred to (ie, have they ever produced a crypt or any history of it in her bloodlines; etc) I don't breed him indiscriminately and only to a very few limited approved mares. He has had no health issues or fertility problems or reproductive disorders...

Anonymous, I also have a beautiful stallion that is a cryptorchid. I have no plans to geld him at this time.

He is a dark bronze palomino, and a grandson of Doc O'Lena. With a pure white mane past his shoulder, and the head of a filly, he truely is spectacular to see.

He is very athletic and a great mover. His conformation is excellent. I feel that being a cryptorchid is a minor problem. I will bred him to my own mares and like yourself, I will keep track of all histories etc.

I think that with further research, this will no longer be considered the fault that it is at this time.

I have a 2 year old TB stud, and he also has only one testicle dropped at this time. I am maintaining an optimistic attitude and crossing my fingers that he will drop, as he was too big of an investment to just geld. And, if he doesn't drop, i will breed him to my own mares anyway. I am glad to know I am not the only one with this problem!!

I have a 9 month old palomino colt who has not yet dropped. Does that mean he will not drop at all or is there a possibility he will drop sometime before 2 years old. I have recieved confusing answers. some have told me that if he has not dropped yet he never will, and others have said he can dropp anytime all the way up to 2 years old. can anyone anvise me about this?

Review the article on cryptorchidism by following that link to the articles section on the web site. It should answer your questions.
