Hi, I'm new to this forum! I have a question. Our mare had her first foal last night. It was awesome, because we got to watch her deliver her baby. Anyway, my question. We're sure that her baby is a stud colt, but we don't see a penis. Is this normal? There seems to be a "hole" under his belly. Is it still up there and will drop later? I know that testicles tend to drop later, but a penis as well? This is our first baby, so we are full of questions. Thanks!!
When our first colt was born 1 month ago, we treated his belly button stump when he was laying down. My husband said "it's a filly". I was so excited because that was what I wanted. When he was up later, I was petting him all over, and I lifted his tail and said "honey there are no girl parts back here!" Then we looked a little more and saw that hole your talking about, and decided that it must of been tucked up in there, and yes the next day it dropped down. Needless to say the little guy is proud to be a boy because it is always hanging out now. Enjoy your little guy. They are so much fun. Here is a picture of mine from Sunday. HI,I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 15 YR OLD MARE FROM A HORSE RESCUE,WHEN SHE WAS VET CHECKED,THE VET SAID SHE WAS NOT PREGNANT(BY PALPATION).HOWEVER NOW SHE HAS QUITE A BELLY AND MIND YOU, SHE WAS APX 150 LBS UNDER WT.SHE ALSO IS PRODUCING COLOSTRUM,THE LAST FEW DAYS HER BAG IS TAUGHT BUT NOT FULL.MY QUESTION IS ,HOW ACCURATE IS CHECKING BY PALPATION? I CALLED THE VET AND SHE SAID SHE COULD HAVE MADE A MISTAKE. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT ANYTHING ELSE WOULD MAKE HER MILK COME IN SO FAST?? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

Sure vets are like anyone else and can make a mistake. So she could be in foal. Mastitis will also cause her bag to fill. My best advice is to have your vet come examine her.
