Can anyone tell me the amount of milk (ounces) that the foal should have after it is born to assure that they get the colostrum?   Kerri Neonate Username: Kerrit Post Number: 1 Registered: 06-2006 Posted on Wednesday, June 07, 2006 - 11:33 am:        Rhea, Generally right after birth you want to give a foal 2-3 ounces of milk at half hour intervals. But keep in mind that mares can produce colustrum for up to 78 hours after foaling, so be sure to milk frequently especially during the first few days to ensure that the foal gets all it's anti-bodies. Also make sure when you're feeding that foal that is is either standing, or laying up on it's sternum so that it doesn't asperate the liquid into it's lungs. This can happen easily if they are laying down and trying to drink. If you need anymore information the books "Blessed are the Broodmares, and Blessed are the Foals" are great resources.
