Hi! I have a 4 year old Welsh Pony/cross that is having her first foal. We bought her last August, Septemberish and she was bred when we bought her. We were SOOOO excited! 2 for the price of 1! We had her preg checked to make for sure, then had her ultrasound done around the first of the year. At that time, the vet measured everything and figured we'd have a baby the first part of March, possibly the end of February.... Well..... What is it now? May 18th? Nooooo baby. I took her in last week AGAIN to make sure it was still alive and sure nuff if was, and the vet commented that if it had been a full size horse, the date he gave us would have been correct. He hasn't dealt with ponies much and basically has no idea. We're in a small town. This mare is only about 4' tall at her withers. (I've never been quite sure how to measure hands!! hehe) She was "accidentally" bred back to a fullsize Paint. I'm worried that the foal may be too big, and what would happen if she never actually goes into labor? What are the circumstances for having to start labor? She's dripping wax this morning like crazy and about 3 weeks ago, you could almost flip her tail up on her back, but now it's hardened up back there again. Is that normal? This is a first-timer too, so all kinds of fun stuff to look forward to. I know this is long and I'm sorry! Any help would be great though! Great site by the way! }}
AB - I wouldn't worry about the pony/horse cross. The Mom regulates the size of the foal at birth, after birth the foal can take after Mom or Dad in final height. Dripping and wax are good signs! She has to be at least close...but, what does close actually mean??? Sometime in the next 24 hours or 30 days...who knows? But, it sounds like she is on the right Mommy track so you should sit back and enjoy! You are right to watch her...just in case there is a problem, but most mares just plop right down and spit them out whether we are there or not!!! By the way, 4" is one hand so 4' = 48" = 12 hands!
We bred an 11 hand pony mare to our 15 hand AQHA stallion and she foaled 3 weeks late with a nice buckskin stud colt. Generally not a problem. Any baby yet? We are now breeding our 13 hand mare to our AQHA stallion for next year. You get the perfect sized riding pony from a cross like this.
}Has this mare foaled yet? I bought the kids a pony in September in Febuary I had all may mares preg-checked. Will Sure enough out of the 3 I questioned they were all bred. We are going to have 5 foals this year. Anyway the last part of sept. first part of Oct. I let her run with the stud, because she acted like she was in heat everytime she got close to him. I never saw them do anything. My stud wont unless the mare is in. Will I took her out. I thought maybe in the night, you never know. Will the vet told me we were going to have a May baby. I said are you sure. He said ya I am sure. I said will she must have been bred then when I got her. He said will I don't know about that. I said ya if I got her her in Sept. then there is no way It could be from my stallion. Will it is now June 12th and I still have no baby out of this mare. Baby seems to be moving great. Momma has a bit of a utter. other then that no signs of having it soon at all. }
