How long after foaling should you wait to start riding a mare? Healthy foal and easy delivery. Not the mare's first foal either.} |

Hi,
I had a mare that was in good shape, riding up to 30 days of delivery, Here first trail ride was at 10 days post foaling. Just a short 20 minute ride up the trail with the little guy following momma. We did that for a couple of weeks, 3x times a week. At three weeks we had the first longer trip ponying on a lead line. Just kept building time and ponyied him all the time for 2 years. He is now 3 and is the best trail horse! Loves to swim, go up hills and down hill like a champ, crosses bridges, goes throught tunnels, walks on busy streets, and does not spoke at "rustling" bushes. I usually do light riding at 3 weeks. |

Thanks! I usually start riding about 2 weeks after foaling, but had someone tell me not to ride until a month after a mare foals. We had such a ball with those babies on the trail. I agree that exposure from an early age helps make a great horse. We raised the dam of this foal and she is the sweetest, quietest mare and we rode hr dam with her about 2-3 weeks after foaling.} |

My mare foaled 2 wks ago and I have been riding her for a week now. Nothing major just very short walks up and down the driveway I ride for maybe 5-10 minutes and than I walk my 6 year old daughter around for a little bit and than take everything off and let mom and baby graze in the yard for awhile. Yesterday I had to go chase them both down with oats though because mom decided to take baby for a little run through the field behind our house after I took everything off. Of course all she has to hear is the oats shaking in the bucket and back she comes. |

Good for you! The best natural training there is in my opinion is ponying a baby. Get's used to things out and about and somebody up above! Enjoy! |

Jan - I figured mom is doing really well and has major energy as she runs in the pasture constantly with baby so I figured short walks would be good for her and get her back in shape. I just had to laugh when they took off through the field the other night. I knew she wouldn't go that far so I wasn't in to much of a hurry to go chase her down it was fun watching mom and baby run through the field and than come trotting back to the yard and into the barn to get fed.... |
