I have a 21 yr old multiparous (about to have #12) mare. At the moment she is at day 333 and shaping up. Belly is pointed, milk is cloudy and sticky, but not sweet. She is restless and only eating hay.
My question is: have any of you ever seen contractions on a mare in stage 1 labor? If I stand a couple of feet from my mare I swear I can see an upward ripple from behind the point of the belly toward the area behind the point of the hip. It seems different from breathing because it is upward and because it reaches a moment of stasis.
In all of my reading (McKinnon and Voss, Vose, Smith Thomas, and Vet Notes for Horse Owners, as well as EqRepro) I can find no evidence that 1st stage contractions are ever visible. Am I nuts? Ok, don't answer that; I'm a horse breeder...
My mare would stand and 'flex' her muscles. I don't know if baby was stomping on something in there or what, but it kind of looked like cramps.
