Have a 24-hour-old miniature foal, very large for size of mare. Nurses if guided to the tit, but haven't seen her nurse on her own. Yet mare's bag is much reduced in size since her birth. Foal seems rather wobbling and sleeping a lot. We feel she was a 12-month foal. Should we assume she got her colostrum since the mare's bag is down significantly and now only milk seems to be coming out?

Catherine: Do you hear the foal swallowing when nursing. When did she first nurse? If mom was bagged up prior to foaling and is now down, I would guess the foal has nursed it down. However, I'd get the vet to do a blood test to make sure.. That colostrum is SO important. Probably a good idea to have the vet check the foal as well.... Sometimes, sleeping is not a bad thing if they're nursing well. Just a suggestion... GOOD LUCK!

Holly: There are some good articles on the web related to parturition and stages of labour. One is on the web site: http://www.equine-reproduction.com/articles/predicting.htm; another site with lots of info is www.foalnet.ca/articles.html
