I had a mare foal a few days ago - the foaling was normal and the placenta passed in about 30 minutes. Upon examination of the placenta, it had some white-ish spots on the inside of the pregnant horn. The spots were generally an inch or two in size, but they varied in size/shape. Our regular vet (versus our repro vet) does the foal exams and said "hmm, that's not quite normal, but I'm not sure what it is". When rubbing a fingernail across the spots, they appeared embedded in the placenta, i.e. they did not have a distinct texture, feel, nor was the placenta thickened at the spots. Also, the rest of the inside of the placenta appeared a little darker red than normal.
What are they? Are they indicators of placentitis?

It sounds like they are areas that might have had a wrinkle in the uterus. I see them in about half the placentas we check.
