I just thought I'd let everyone who doesn't know, when the horse is first born, they have this really weird stuff on the bottom of their hooves. It almost feels like feathers dipped in oil. It soon falls off.
My vet said they get calls all the time from panicked owners who think their foal's hooves are deformed.
Just thought I'd pass it on, as it was a surprise to me!! But I felt it on all four feet, so figured it was normal. Saved a call to my vet at 1:30 AM!
YEs, the foaling book I was looking at made itr very clear. They have to have soft, feathery feet inside mom or they would punch holes in mom. I expected it, but it didn't look that abnormal to me--maybe because mine wouldn't lay down for two hours once she got up, so it wasn't so scary looking!
